The Executive Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Comrade Kamal Olawale Salau-Bashua represented by the  Vice Chairman, Hon. Monsoru Ogboye observed the year 2020 Tree Planting Day, tagged “Tree for Life” in the council area on Tuesday, 14th July 2020. An Annual event held across the state to protect the environment against the effects of Global Climate Change  and sustain the Greening Initiative of the State Government.

In his Address, the Council Boss urged the Residents to Protect the environment, maintain Personal and community hygiene and charged them to Shun all forms of practices that have adverse effects on the earth. He also  applauded the efforts  of Health and Frontline Workers who through commitment and dedication to service risked their lives everyday to ensure Individual and Public Health.

Speaking further, Salau-Bashua emphasised the health benefits of Tree Planting and availability in the Community to human inhabitants. He said “The importance of Tree Planting can never be overstressed particularly at a time like this when making our environment clean and healthy for living has become a Priority Worldwide. “A healthy environment breed healthy Citizens with Propensity to withstand diseases even in the face of outbreak such as Coronavirus Pandemic ravaging the world, he said.

In his closing remarks, the Mayor said he would not relent in his efforts to serve and deliver top rated and Qualitative Governance to the Residents and Visitors of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area. He also vowed to continue to empower the Residents for self development and actualisation, build more World class  socio-economic infrastructures in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s “THEMES” Agenda towards Greater Lagos.

Present at the Tree Planting exercise were the Vice Chairman, Hon. Monsuru Ogboye representing the Chairman Comrade Kamal Salau-Bashua, Leader of the House, Hon. Sanmide Akinsuyi, Chairman House Committee on Environment, Hon. Babajide Alli-Balogun, Council Manager, Mrs. Folashade Usman, Head, Department of Environmental Service, Mrs. Bisi Oladaye

While reacting to the persistent Human-induced environmental challenges such as flooding and blocked drainages, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Ogboye pleaded with the Locals to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the Drainage and dispose off their domestic waste properly.

During an interview session with the Council Manager, Mrs. Folashade Usman highlighted the importance of Tree Planting to include but not limited to healthy environment, Prevention of flooding and Provision of Shelter to Humans against harsh weather condition. She also charged the Residents to be friendly with the environment and desist from all acts of behaviours that could pose threats to the environment.

The Head of the Environmental services in the Local Council Development Area , Mrs. Olabisi Olajaiye implored the people of Lagos Island East and beyond  to observe the stipulated guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Health Workers and the Government as measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in Lagos and the World.
