Mr Opeyemi Ogunsuyi ,an Assistant lecturer in the department of Biomedical Technology , School of Health and Health Technology, Federal University of Technology Akure has been awarded an International Foundation for Science (IFS) grant for his PhD project titled: Effect of African Eggplant ( Solanum macrocarpon L) and black nightshade ( Solanum nigrum L) leaves on transgenic Drosophila melanogaster Model of Alzheimer’s disease.
Ogunsuyi is completing his project at the Universidale Federal de Santa Maria Brazil as a split site project under the aegis of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) Brazil and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
The grant is intended for the purchase of basic tools of research, equipment, expendable supplies, literature as well as other expenses connected to the programme such as local travels and extra manpower.
The IFS provides grants to strengthen the capabilities of young scientists in developing countries who are at the beginning of their careers and whose research is related to biological resources, water resources including socio economic aspects.
IFS scientific Programme Coordinator , Nathalie Persson Andrianasitera in the letter conveying the award said : ” it is the foundation’s wish that through personal grants , our support will also help to build up research capacities of the receiving institution. The foundation will greatly value your cooperation, so that the grant will benefit your entire team”
The duo of the Dean of SHHT, Professor Ayotunde Adeagbo and the Head Department of Biomedical Technology, Dr Vincent Akpan, described Ogunsuyi as a brilliant scholar, committed to the growth of the School and said the award was well deserved and an added achievement to the School.
Congratulating him, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape expressed his delight that SHHT has fully come into its own by producing staff and students who are winning laurels for the institution.He lauded Ogunsuyi’s feat and urged him to be a worthy ambassador of the institution while wishing him success in all his endeavors.
