Eating too much sugar can have a variety of negative effects on your health, including the expansion of your waistline, but did you also know that too much of the sweet stuff can cause the brain to shrink!
The Doctors welcome psychotherapist Dr. Mike Dow, author of “The Sugar Brain Fix,” to discuss how it affects the brain in ways you might have never imagined.
Dr. Dow coined the term “sugar brain” and says signs of it can be:
Feeling blue
Feelings of impulsivity
Experiencing brain fog
He notes that having too much of it can create a vicious cycle where you constantly crave more and more of it and the excess sugar can then possibly continue to affect your brain and lead to potential longterm damage.
To combat the effects of excess sugar, Dr. Dow suggests adopting a combination of a ketogenic and Mediterranean diet, along with some intermittent fasting and exercise in the morning.
Foods you should try to incorporate into daily life, according to Dr Dow, include salmon, blueberries, leafy greens, mushrooms, red peppers, and bone broth. This plan does not eliminate it completely and allows participants to indulge from time to time.
