FORTY-three internal roads in tertiary institutions are undergoing rehabilitation, Minister of Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Fashola has said.
The minister, who spoke when handing over a two-kilometre rehabilitated internal road at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and a 1.8-kilometre road at the University of Ibadan (UI), to the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Abiodun Otegbayo of the UCH and UI Vice Chancellor Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, said the move was part of the Federal Government’s commitment to bridge the gap of infrastructural needs of Nigerians.
Fashola, represented by the Controller of Works in Oyo State, Mr. Oladimeji Awopetu, said 18 of the 43 roads have been completed.
He said: “Today, we are handing over these roads at the University College Hospital, Ibadan and the University of Ibadan, Ibadan as a contribution to support education.”
The minister said the gap of infrastructural needs in the country “is being bridged by a gradual process of repair, renewal and construction on major highways, and it has reached the schools.”
“It is un-debatable that quality education will be impacted by the quality of infrastructure and learning environment. Those who doubt it should listen to some of the feedback from students in the schools where this type of intervention has taken place,” he added.
He urged the UCH and UI management to ensure that the roads are properly used.
The CMD of UCH hailed President Muhammadu Buhari and Mr. Fashola for rehabilitating the roads. The UI VC thanked the Buhari administration for prioritising the education sector.
