The declaration of June 12 as democracy day by President Muhammadu Buhari has finally provided an opportunity to heal the wounds of Nigerians who genuinely felt aggrieved by the way the day went, the Arewa Next Step for Tinubu (ANEST) has said.
The group hailed Buhari for listening to the popular views of Nigerians by replacing May 29 of every year with June 12, as Democracy Day.
In a statement to mark the day, the group’s Deputy Director – General, Musa Usman, ANEST noted that the President has clearly aligned himself with the feelings and beliefs of the people that the latter day was more meaningful than the former.
It reads: “June 12, most Nigerians believe, has become a watershed in the annals of Nigeria’s democratic journey that must be assuaged and recognised in order to heal the wounds of Nigerians who genuinely felt aggrieved by the way it went.
“The commemoration of the day coincides with 21st year of Nigeria unbroken democratic experience. Suffice to say that a lot has been achieved to stamp our place in the comity of democratic nations in the world.
“By recognising June 12 as Democracy Day, the government of President Buhari has made a loud statement that the toils and struggles of those who stood for democracy have not gone unsung.”
