The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees has threatened to shut all the 774 local government areas in the country if dialogue and engagement with the National Assembly on the plan to delist local government councils from the constitution fails.
Recall that a House of Representatives member from Rivers State had sponsored a bill to expunge local government councils from the constitution.
The National President of NULGE, Hakeem Ambali, at a sensitisation meeting organised for officials of the union from the North-West zone in Kano on Wednesday, said the union would have no option than to close down the local government areas across the country if the National Assembly does not step down the bill.
The National President who was represented by National Treasurer, Aliyu Kankara, said, “The National Assembly has agreed to meet us for a dialogue and engagement but in the event that fails, we will shut all the 774 local government councils in the country.
“This struggle is not for NULGE, it is for the Nigerian masses because no sane person in this country will support the delisting of the councils from the constitution,” he said.
He said if the bill was allowed to scale through, the local government councils would no longer be recognised as third tier of government.
