The National Bureau of Statistics said the figure represents 63 percent of the nation’s population.
The NBS disclosed this in its “Nigeria Multidimensional Poverty Index’’ released in Abuja.
The Statistician-General of the Federation Semiu Adeniran said 70 percent of Nigeria’s population live in rural areas.
The report noted that multidimensional poverty is higher in rural areas, where 72 per cent of people are poor, compared to 42 per cent of people in urban areas.
The Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba said the administration planned to lay the foundation for 100 million Nigerians to be lifted out of poverty.
The Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari said the report provides insight into the present administration’s multisector approach to fighting poverty.
According to the report, over half of the population who are poor cook with wood or charcoal, rather than clean energy.
