The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the unfortunate passing of Reverend Father Faustinus Gundu, a devoted Catholic priest.
Rev. Fr. Gundu, the Parish Priest of St. Joseph Catholic Church Jootar in Ukum Local Government Area of the state, met a tragic end on Thursday under mysterious circumstances.
Reports regarding the incident differ, with one account suggesting that he was struck by lightning, while another claims he collapsed and succumbed to his fate.
It was gathered that, the late Fr. Gundu had laid out a towel outdoors and ventured to retrieve it when an unexpected downpour began.
In his haste to collect the towel, he slipped and fell, striking his head against a hard surface. Regrettably, there was no one present to assist the priest during the duration of the rain.
“In the process of rushing out to pick the towel outside, he slipped and fell hitting his head on a hard surface.
“As at the time of the incident, no one was available to help the priest, he was there throughout the period rain lasted”, a source who does not want to be mentioned in print said.
The news of the incident only reached the public when the priest had already passed away.
When contacted for a statement, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, acknowledged the incident.
However, she was unable to confirm whether the priest had collapsed and perished or if he had been affected by a lightning strike.
SP Anene explained, “I have received the report, but they alleged thunder. A conclusive determination can only be made after a thorough investigation.”
