One Azeez Akinpelu has been sentenced to death by hanging by an Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta, for killing a minor, one Rokibat Odeyale.
The 23-year-old resident of Owode, Ogun State, was found guilty on six counts including conspiracy, possession of firearms, manslaughter, attempted murder, and murder.
The tragic incident occurred around 6:00 pm on 27 March, 2021, at Atala People Igbeyin, Owode Egba, where the convict allegedly conspired with acquaintances to fatally shoot the victim in the head using a locally made pistol.
The crime unfolded during the festivities of Orile Igbeyin Day, when amidst the celebrations, a gunshot rang out from the crowd, leading to the demise of the young victim.
According to the prosecution, the perpetrator aimed the gunshot at a group of children who were dancing and entertaining guests.
In delivering the judgement on Monday, Justice O.O Stanley concluded that the prosecution successfully established Mr. Akinpelu’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Consequently, the judge imposed multiple sentences on Mr. Akinpelu, including the ultimate penalty of death by hanging.
