In compliance with a presidential directive, the Nigeria Customs Service, Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, has released 15 seized trucks of grains to their owners.
The announcement came through a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Abdullahi Abubakar, on Tuesday.
President Bola Tinubu had directed the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to return all confiscated food items from border communities to their owners.
This was with the condition that the items would be sold in Nigerian markets to enhance food sufficiency.
During the handover of the trucks of grain at the command’s headquarters in Sokoto, Customs Area Comptroller Kamal Mohammed urged traders to reciprocate President Tinubu’s gesture by ensuring that the grains are sold within Nigerian markets.
Mohammed emphasized the importance of monitoring the sales to prevent smuggling out of the country. He highlighted that grains are on the extant Export Prohibition list and warned smugglers to desist from such activities, vowing to make borders unsafe for them.
In response, Secretary of the Grain Sellers Association of Sokoto, Dahiru Ladan praised President Tinubu’s decision, pledging that the association would ensure compliance with the directive to sell the grains in Nigerian markets.
