Three students of Nasarawa State University tragically lost their lives in a stampede that occurred during the distribution of rice palliatives by the state government.
The incident unfolded at the convocation square in Keffi, where bags of rice awaited distribution in anticipation of the arrival of Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the overwhelming crowd of students, eager to access the rice, overwhelmed security personnel and breached the gate, triggering a chaotic stampede.
Moses Ajah, one of the eyewitnesses, described the scene as unfortunate, noting that some students seized bags of rice and fled to their hostels and other residences even before the governor’s arrival to officially kick-start the distribution.
“As more students became aware, the situation escalated.
“Struggles ensued between students and the police over the rice, resulting in injuries to some students who are currently receiving treatment at the school,” he said.
Reports indicate that police officers have commenced efforts to retrieve the palliatives from students amidst the aftermath of the tragic incident.
The University’s Protocol Officer, Abraham Ekpo, confirmed the unfortunate event and assured that further details would be provided in due course.
The untimely loss of lives during what was intended to be a gesture of support and relief underscores the need for better crowd control measures and organized distribution strategies during such welfare initiatives.
As investigations unfold, the Nasarawa State University community mourns the loss of its students and grapples with the aftermath of this heartbreaking tragedy.
