A villager named Joseph Jelmang was allegedly killed by a drunk soldier during a birthday celebration in Marish community of Bokko local government area, Plateau State.
According to the Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC), the incident took place on April 22, prompting condemnation from the community.
In a statement issued by BCDC chairman Barr. Farmasum Fuddang, it was claimed that the soldier, identified as Gideon, fired random shots while celebrating his birthday at a relaxation center, resulting in the death of Jelmang.
The council strongly condemned the incident and demanded swift action from military authorities and the Attorney General to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrator.
The body said: “We strongly condemned the perpetrators’ desperate attempt to conceal the crime by falsely labeling the innocent passerby and residents who tried to save his life by transporting him to the hospital as militants.
“We demand the swift and decisive action of the military authorities and the Attorney General in apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrator to the fullest extent of the law.”
BCDC also called for the immediate release of individuals previously arrested by soldiers in Marish.
Efforts to reach the spokesman of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) in Jos, Major Samson Khazom, for comment were unsuccessful.
