Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he won’t retire from active politics anytime soon.
He said those who think he will quit the stage despite the deteriorating state of the economy and the injustice going on in the country are daydreamers.
Mr Abubakar, who was the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, stated this during an interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC on Friday.
Speaking of his recent meeting with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, Mr Abubakar hints at possible alliance talks with opposition leaders.
“We fiercely fought even the military governments; let alone the civilian administrations.
“So, if you’re thinking otherwise, you might be dreaming. We would never retrace from fighting injustice, and bad governance. I am not yet tired of the political activism,” he said.
“Anybody who thinks there would be any misunderstanding between Obi and me is missing it. Nothing will happen. And we will always be there to support whoever is qualified to lead.”
Mr Abubakar also said his fate in the 2027 election would be determined by the zoning decisions of the party.
“I’ve made it clear since last elections that if our party members had a consensus that Southeast should produce the candidate, we would all agree. And if our parties also had a similar agreement, then so be it.”
When asked to comment, if his recent meeting is part of his arrangements to contest the 2027 election, the former vice president insisted that,“We are in a democratic system, and don’t forget that we are those who fought for its entrenchment.
“So, we are going to continue entrenching good governance and a sound democratic system. We would never fold our arms watching things deteriorate.”
