By Mustapha Usman
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano has launched the disbursement of N50,000 to each of the 5,200 women across the 44 Local Government areas of the state.
Speaking during the launching of the programme at Government House in Kano on Tuesday, the governor said the cash, amounting to N260 million, would be disbursed every month to new sets of the 5,200 women until the end of his tenure.
According to him, the grant is a start-up to the beneficiaries to run small scale businesses to uplift their economic status in view of the family burden they shoulder.
Mr Yusuf explained that the programme, which was coordinated by Community Re-orientation Committee, CRC, involves supporting 100 women each from the 36 Local Governments in rural areas and 200 women each from the 8 metropolitan LGAs.
The governor also declared that the support is a payback to women for their overwhelming support to his success in the 2023 elections.
“This is a payback for your support and contributions to our success during 2023 election.
“We promised to support you to take care of yourselves and your children. We pledged to make you self reliant and take care of your health, especially pregnant women among you and children.
“Today we have fulfilled our promise. We will be doing this to same number of women every month till the end of our government.
“The money is meant to be used as a startup grants for small scale businesses like awara, gireba, koko da kosai, local juices, kuli -kuli, etc.
“In addition, in our resolve to support you, we have renovated and upgraded hospitals especially maternity and paediatric units and we are still upgrading others across the state, all in a bid to ease your suffering and empower you,” Mr Yusuf said.
The governor urged the beneficiaries to utilize the grant judiciously, threatening to deal with any official trying to swindle the women of any amount.
