Special Eagles
Nigeria’s amputee football national team, Special Eagles slammed eleven unreplied goals past Burundi at the ongoing African Amputee Football Cup of Nations in Egypt on Tuesday.
The Special Eagles booked the quarterfinal spot with the outstanding victory.
Burundi, the whipping boys in the group after getting smashed by host Egypt 10-2 earlier, suffered the big defeat against the Nigerian Eagles which ended their AFCON journey.
Striker Michael Jewell shone brightly, scoring seven goals. Turkey-based Mohammad Grima added a hat-trick, and Olaa Buhachi scored another goal, making it an easy win against the newcomers.
This big win ensured the Special Eagles comfortably topped Group A, thanks to their superior goal difference over hosts Egypt.
Nigeria will face the second-placed team from Group B in the quarterfinals on Thursday night. Liberia is expected to finish behind Morocco in that group, depending on the outcome of their late match on Wednesday.
Seven out of the teams that advance to the quarterfinals will qualify for the 2026 Amputee World Cup in Morocco.
Nigeria’s best performance at the Nations Cup was a second-place finish at the 2019 edition in Angola, where they lost 2-0 to the hosts in the final.
