A yet-to-be identified male student of the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State has died after being physically assaulted by his colleagues for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.

According to reports, he was beaten from 10 pm to 6 am in a hostel known as Shepherd Inn after the mobile phone had been recovered from him, leading to his death.

The deceased was also said to have had his hair forcefully shaved by his assailants after he was caught with the stolen mobile phone.

Some disturbing videos shared on social media showed a male student beating his colleague who was seen rolling on the floor with a cane, while another was heard shouting ‘harder, harder.’ indicating that he should beat him more.

The deceased was reportedly thrown out of the hostel on Friday evening, where he was discovered to have died early on Saturday.

The varsity management in a statement credited to its spokesperson, Femi Atoyebi said the group of students who assaulted the deceased had been expelled.

He added that the students had been handed over to the police for prosecution.

“Contrary to what is trending, the university affirms that there is no cultism in the institution, just as the university has zero tolerance for any sort of anti-societal vices and misconduct.

“It is important to stress that the expelled students do not belong to any cult group,” Atoyebi said.
