The Lagos State government has announced the discontinuation of the 25 percent fare discount on state-owned public transport services starting on Sunday.
The Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) stated on Saturday that transport fares on all state-owned transport services will revert to their original rates effective Monday.
In an effort to offset the effects of the removal of petrol subsidy by the Federal Government, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had reduced transport fares on public transport operated by LAMATA and Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) by 50 percent from August 2, 2023, following an announcement on July 31, 2023.
However, the fare discount was later adjusted to 25 percent in November 2023.
In a statement, LAMATA indicated that the 25 percent fare discount on regulated public transport buses, ferries, and train services will end on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024.
Starting from Monday, June 3rd, 2024, transport fares on all regulated transport services in the state will revert to their original rates of 100 percent.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on February 23rd that a 25 percent discount would be provided, building upon the six-month 50 percent discount that started on July 31, 2023, in response to the fuel subsidy removal.
LAMATA further noted that the discounted public transport system fares led to the state government allocating efforts and resources towards transport subsidies to alleviate the challenges stemming from the fuel subsidy removal implemented in May of the previous year.
