The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially notified the Federal Government of Nigeria of its intention to commence a nationwide strike, issuing a 21-day notice.
Sources within ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) confirmed the development on Monday in Abuja.
The strike notice was issued following a NEC meeting held at the University of Ibadan with plans to forward a copy to the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education.
“It is not an ultimatum but a strike notice. We are giving them 21 days’ notice, after which we shall embark on strike,” a source revealed, emphasizing that the notice is a legal requirement under labor laws.
This action follows ASUU’s longstanding dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to implement agreements reached in previous negotiations.
On June 26, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, held a meeting with ASUU to address the issues affecting universities and to prevent the looming strike.
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed frustration over the government’s lack of progress, noting that agreements reached had not been implemented.
He highlighted that one of the key issues is the non-implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, which have been unresolved for over six years.
Osodeke also pointed out that academic allowances due to ASUU members have accumulated over the years without action from the government.
Additionally, the union is concerned about the lack of progress on the revitalization fund, which was agreed upon to allocate N200 billion annually for five years, starting from 2013. So far, only one payment has been made.
The ASUU president further criticized the government for the proliferation of new universities without adequate funding, stressing that this undermines the quality of education in the country.
The 21-day notice marks a critical juncture in the ongoing dispute, with ASUU prepared to take strike action if the government fails to meet its demands within the stipulated period.
