Aisha Yesufu
Nigerian socio-political activist and co-convener of Bring Back Our Girls Movement, Aisha Yesufu has declared that she would choose a 20-year prison sentence over singing the new national anthem, which she labeled as President Bola Tinubu’s anthem.
This statement follows reports of a controversial bill, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, which proposes severe penalties for those who undermine national symbols or engage in actions leading to separatist agitation or conflict.
The bill, now awaiting its second reading, suggests that those who destroy national symbols, refuse to recite the national anthem and pledge, deface places of worship to incite violence, or subvert the Federal Government of Nigeria could face fines up to N5 million or 10 years imprisonment, or both.
The social critic reacted strongly to the proposed bill, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Will choose 20 years in prison rather than sing Tinubu’s anthem passed by slaves masquerading as lawmakers in the National Assembly.”
The activist has publicly rejected the new anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’.
Recall that in a recent video, Yesufu was seen sitting while others stood for the anthem, which she later posted on her X account with the caption, “Not my anthem.”
