Security operatives have been deployed to rescue the 20 medical students abducted on Thursday evening along the Otukpo-Otukpa-Enugu Road.
On Friday, the spokesperson for the state command, SP Catherine Anene, stated that the command, in collaboration with other security agencies, had deployed officers to ensure the rescue of the abducted medical students.
She said, “Yes, we have deployed officers to rescue the abducted medical students. It is definitely a joint force; police in collaboration with other security agencies were deployed.”
Anene also added that the medical students were abducted around Ojano village located along Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road.
Ojano is located about 20 minutes from Otukpo town, along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road, an area particularly known for criminal activity.
Despite a significant security presence, the Otukpo/Otukpa section of this federal highway has seen numerous incidents of kidnapping involving prominent individuals such as former local government chairmen, priests, and the Rector of Benue State Polytechnic, among others.
On Thursday evening, 20 medical students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos were abducted while traveling along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road.
The students were reportedly en route to the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students in Enugu when they encountered the gunmen.
