Chief Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised concerns about the internal dynamics of the party, citing Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, as a significant challenge.
Wike, who previously served as the governor of Rivers State, remains a notable figure within the PDP, despite his role in the Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
In an interview with New Telegraph, Sowunmi remarked, “I think that is the biggest elephant in our room. The major polarizing issue in our party is that.”
Sowunmi questioned Wike’s loyalty to the PDP, stating, “Even when he says he is a member of the party, is his spirit, body, and soul still in the party?” He acknowledged the apprehension among party members, citing historical instances where individuals have straddled party lines.
Referencing past experiences, Sowunmi noted, “When late Chief Bola Ige served in the PDP government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he was a member of the AD.
There is precedence for such situations.” However, he emphasized the need for the party to move forward rather than remain mired in past issues.
In light of these challenges, Sowunmi mentioned that a disciplinary committee is currently in place within the PDP.
He urged anyone with evidence of misconduct to present their case for review. “We will have to see how it goes,” he added, highlighting the party’s commitment to addressing internal conflicts.
