Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has launched a scathing attack on Betsy Obaseki, the wife of his successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki, accusing her of being barren and lacking the capacity to love children.
Oshiomhole also criticized Mrs. Obaseki for her unwillingness to adopt a child despite being in her 60s, suggesting that this undermines her moral authority to judge others.
Oshiomhole made the remarks while responding to a previous statement made by Mrs. Obaseki, in which she questioned the suitability of APC gubernatorial candidate Monday Okpebholo by highlighting his unmarried status.
Oshiomhole expressed shock at Mrs. Obaseki’s comments, describing them as insensitive, given her own situation.
He told reporters that, “I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs Obaseki, the first lady, saying our (APC) candidate has no wife. She is the most…I’m sorry she had to say that because here is a woman who has no child.
“Between him(sic) and Obaseki, they are childless.”
The senator further criticized the First Lady and her husband, Governor Obaseki, for not choosing to adopt children despite their many years of marriage. He suggested that their decision not to adopt reflects a lack of love for children.
“They are not even ready to adopt. I don’t blame anyone if you don’t have a child, but people who have love for children, they go to motherless homes and adopt children. They have not adopted, they are both in their sixties.
“I don’t know whether it’s a contract or whatever it is, but they have no child,” he stressed.
Oshiomhole also took the opportunity to promote Mr. Okpebholo, emphasizing his commitment to family and the education of his children.
Peoples Gazette reports that Oshiomhole proudly highlighted that Mr. Okpebholo’s first child is a lawyer, and his second child is a medical doctor, both of whom are active in the campaign.
“Now, our candidate, not only does he have children, he has invested in the education of those children such that you watch them on live television, covered by your media stations where the first one that spoke is a lawyer, the second one is a medical doctor, and they addressed the crowd in Edo South, in Edo central and the North and their mother was there,” the senator bragged.
Oshiomhole and Governor Obaseki were once political allies, with Oshiomhole supporting Obaseki’s candidacy in 2016.
However, their relationship soured, leading to Obaseki’s defection from the APC to the PDP in 2020, where he secured a second term as governor.
