A 23-year-old journalist from Ghana, Abdul Hakim Awal, has officially set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest time spent hugging a tree, achieving an impressive 24 hours and 21 minutes.
The record-breaking feat was announced by GWR in a blog post on Tuesday.
Awal, who undertook this unique challenge, maintained his position standing and kept his arms wrapped around the tree without any breaks for the entire duration.
The previous record of 16 hours was held by Ugandan environmental activist Faith Patricia Ariokot, who set the mark earlier this year.
In a statement following his accomplishment, Awal expressed his motivation behind the record attempt, emphasizing the importance of reforestation and nature conservation in Ghana.
“We know how trees, an essential resource which the entire human race depends on, are becoming scarce in Ghana,” he said.
He highlighted that despite being educated about tree preservation from a young age, collective efforts to protect these vital resources have been lacking.
Awal pledged to plant a new tree for every minute he spent hugging the tree, which amounts to a total of 1,461 trees.
“This attempt for the longest time to hug a tree, to me, spells out an important task to preserve human life by preserving trees,” he added.
