The Nigeria Police Force has said it strongly condemned the unauthorised use of official uniforms and accoutrements by content creators, while referring to a specific case by a social media influencer, Martins Otse, popularly known as “VeryDarkMan
In a statement on Saturday which was shared on the police X handle, the Force reminded Nigerians that an unauthorised use of Police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements constitutes a criminal offense.
While it said that investigation into circulating video by VeryDarkMan had been launched to determine the source of the police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted, the Force said it unequivocally disassociated itself from the unauthorised portrayal.
“It is important to remind the public that the unauthorised use of Police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements constitutes a criminal offense, as stipulated in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and is subject to strict penalties.
“While the Nigeria Police Force recognises and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation space, we strongly caution against the misuse of Police uniforms or symbols.
“Unauthorised use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated,” the statement partly read.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time the police have addressed unauthorised use of its uniforms.
In 2022, the police expressed concerns over individuals, movie makers, and skit makers using police uniforms and accoutrements without approval.
