The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the federal government to tackle the pressing issues of economic hardship and widespread hunger affecting citizens.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Clerk of NANS Senate, Abdulyekinn Odunayo, the student body called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to introduce policies aimed at revitalizing the nation’s struggling economy.
Odunayo emphasized that since the current administration assumed office, Nigerians have endured increasing poverty and food insecurity, which he described as unjustifiable.
“There is an urgent need by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to put measures in place to arrest hunger, poverty, impoverishment going on in the country.
Nigerians are grappling with the severe impact of the current economic crisis, with many describing the situation as unprecedented in the nation’s history.
“The dual swords of Damocles of fuel subsidy removal and float of naira have stabbed Nigerians in their hearts. Many families can no longer feed even once a day, let alone three times a day. Free falls of our currency against the dollar and other international currencies have capped the sufferings of Nigerians,
“As representatives of the Nigerian students, we are making a passionate call on the president to tailor and rev up his economic policies to provide short term, medium term and long term reliefs for Nigerians. Things need to improve as many Nigerians are finding it difficult to survive”, the Clerk of the Senate said.
He criticized the Tinubu-led administration for simultaneously removing fuel subsidies and floating the naira, actions he said have deepened Nigeria’s economic woes, intensified hunger, and driven up the cost of living for millions.
He noted that while many Nigerians had hoped the current government would address the economic challenges inherited from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the country has instead seen a sharp rise in the prices of food and other essential goods.
He further highlighted the impact on students, many of whom have been forced to abandon their education due to the worsening economic conditions.
Although he acknowledged the student loan scheme introduced by President Tinubu as a measure that has benefited some students, he called for a comprehensive overhaul of the economy to fulfill the administration’s promise of good governance for all Nigerians.
