The President Bola Tinubu-led Government has scheduled the Nigerian national youth conference for February 2025.
This followed the President’s Independence Day proposal to address key youth-centred issues such as unemployment, education, and political participation.
“This conference aims to provoke meaningful dialogue and empower our young people to participate actively in nation-building,” President Tinubu had said.
However, the lack of action since the announcement has frustrated many youth groups, including the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yoruba Youths Council, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, and the Ijaw National Congress.
AYCF President Zaid Ayuba expressed disappointment, saying, “The President’s announcement of such a conference was an opportunity… to bring it to fruition. However, this failed to materialise.”
Similarly, Yoruba Youths Council President Eric Oluwole lamented, “Nigerian youths are not happy with Tinubu on the delay in organising the national youth conference.”
Dr Alex Ogbonnia, spokesman for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, warned that further delay undermines Tinubu’s credibility, stating, “It will enable the President to know the yearnings of the youth.”
The Ijaw National Congress’ Ezonebi Oyekemeagbegha cautioned against youth disengagement and apathy.
Meanwhile, Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande clarified on Saturday, “We will do the confab by the first week of February… three weeks of this confab will be spent with the grassroots.”
Olawande assured the conference would focus on action-oriented solutions rather than symbolic gestures.
The month-long event would include two weeks of grassroots engagement, one week at state and local levels, and conclude with a final week in Abuja. Committees are being formed to ensure a result-oriented approach.
In October, Olawande mentioned plans for a task force to implement conference recommendations, saying, “We will start having this as quickly as possible. So, it’s a done deal.”
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also called for swift action, demanding youth representation in governance.
