A Police division in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, has been set ablaze by irate youths.
The violent protest was sparked by the alleged torture and death of a young man in police custody.
Although the incident occurred on Saturday evening, details remain scarce.
According to Daily Trust, sources in Ifon, a border town with Edo State, revealed that the deceased’s friends and community members took to the streets to protest his death, leading to the destruction of the police station.
A source revealed that the unrest was sparked by a Valentine’s Day altercation. Upon learning of the young man’s death in police custody, a mob of protesters converged on the police station, overwhelming the officers and wreaking havoc.
The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, has confirmed the incident and announced that additional police personnel have been deployed to the area.
Furthermore, Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi is en route to Ifon to restore peace and prevent further violence.
