The Nigerian government has confirmed new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) also known as Bird Flu in Kaduna State.

Confirming the incident, Dr. Taiwo Olasoju, on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, noted that the recent outbreak highlights the ongoing risk to poultry production and emphasises the need for heightened biosecurity measures.

The newly confirmed H5N1 virus outbreak was reported last week on a layer farm, with a 6.5% mortality rate.

Clinical signs included hyperemic wattles and shanks, high morbidity, and greenish diarrhea.

In response to the development, the Nigerian government urged poultry farmers, live bird market operators, and stakeholders to enhance surveillance, remain vigilant, and report any unusual mortalities to veterinary authorities.

Other recommended measures include strengthening biosecurity protocols, restricting farm access, improving disinfection practices, implementing movement controls, and limiting the movement of poultry, feed, and farm personnel between locations to prevent the spread of the disease.

“Considering recent global trends, we recommend testing companion animals (cats and dogs) in close contact with affected poultry to monitor potential viral spillover,” the statement said.
