Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has threatened to dethrone traditional rulers of the warring Ifon, Erin Osun and Ilobu communities in the state if they fail to maintain peace in their communities.
In a statement released in Osogbo, the state capital, on Monday by his spokesperson, Mr. Olawale Rasheed, the governor emphasised the need for the monarchs to ensure stability in their communities following recent violent clashes over long-standing boundary disputes.
The conflict has led to loss of lives and destruction of properties worth billions of naira.
The governor’s warning comes amid reports that certain groups were planning fresh attacks in the affected communities despite ongoing peace efforts.
“During the Sallah celebrations, I received intelligence about some individuals plotting another round of violence in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun. Security agencies have been placed on high alert to prevent any outbreak of violence,” Adeleke stated.
The governor further disclosed that security operatives were expediting their investigations into key figures involved in the crisis.
He reiterated that the peace agreements signed by community leaders were not mere formalities.
“The curfew was relaxed on humanitarian grounds, as we recognise that many innocent people are suffering due to the actions of a few troublemakers.
“However, any attempt to exploit this leniency for renewed violence will lead to the full re-imposition of the 24-hour curfew,” he warned.
Governor Adeleke also declared his readiness to take drastic measures against any traditional ruler under whose leadership violence resurfaces.
“I will remove from office any monarch in whose domain violence erupts again. The royal fathers must take responsibility for maintaining peace. Enough is enough,” he threatened.
