Sheikh Onikijipa & Adam
A storm is brewing in Nigeria’s Islamic community after Sheikh Muhammed Adam (El-Ilory), the leader (Mudir) of the prestigious Markaz Agege, made a shocking claim that fellow cleric Sheikh Sulaimon Farooq Onikijipa was behind a mysterious illness that struck him in 2022—allegedly through diabolical means.
The explosive accusation was made during the 2025 Ramadan Tafseer Programme at Markaz Agege, sending ripples through the Muslim faithful. According to Sheikh Adam, his sudden ailment was not natural but a spiritual attack orchestrated by Onikijipa over an old grudge.
Tracing the root of their feud, Adam alleged that it all started when his father, a revered Islamic scholar, failed to mention Onikijipa’s father in a book listing noble Islamic clerics. He claimed this perceived slight led to resentment and ultimately, a supernatural attack.
“Sheikh Onikijipa accused my father of omitting his father’s name from the list of noble Islamic clerics. But who is his father? He is not the rightful heir of the Onikijipa lineage. The true heirs are those residing in the family compound in Ilorin. The recognized heir is Alfa Alabi Onikijipa, a student of Sheikh Taju Al-Adaby,” Adam declared.
Backing up his claims, the Markaz leader recounted two eerie incidents where he allegedly fell victim to spiritual manipulation. At a wedding ceremony in Ilorin, he claimed an unknown individual rubbed a handkerchief on his neck before handing it to Onikijipa. In another unsettling moment, he alleged that Onikijipa slipped two small gourds into his pocket at another wedding, after which he suddenly lost his ability to speak.
“I didn’t lose consciousness, but I couldn’t talk. Later, he sent my personal assistant to retrieve the items, claiming they were for protection,” Adam narrated.
These allegations have ignited widespread debate, with many in the Islamic community struggling to come to terms with the seriousness of the claims. However, Sheikh Onikijipa has strongly denied any wrongdoing, swearing by the Quran to prove his innocence.
Speaking before a congregation in Ilorin, Onikijipa invoked divine curses to affirm that he had no hand in Adam’s illness.
“I have never sworn by the Quran in my life, but today I will. If I had anything to do with Mudir Markaz’s illness, may the curses of the holy book be upon me. But if I am falsely accused, let the curses be upon them,” he declared.
The unfolding drama has deepened divisions within the Islamic community, with many calling for calm and reconciliation. As religious leaders weigh in on the matter, there is growing pressure for both parties to seek peaceful resolution rather than escalate the dispute.
