Rita Uguamaye & Tinubu
Temitope Ajayi, a media aide to President Bola Tinubu, has sparked outrage after calling for capital punishment against Ushie Rita Uguamaye, an NYSC corps member who criticized the President in a viral TikTok video.
Uguamaye, who serves in Lagos State, posted an emotional video under the handle @talktoraye, expressing frustration over the soaring cost of living in Nigeria. In her remarks, she described Tinubu as a “terrible” president and accused his administration of failing to address economic hardship.
“If a lot of Nigerians come out and start speaking about what we are going through, maybe changes will be made in the government,” she stated. “I don’t know if there is any other president as terrible as you, but you are such a terrible president.”
Shortly after the video gained traction, Uguamaye received multiple calls from NYSC officials, pressuring her to delete the video and refrain from criticizing the government. In a follow-up clip, she revealed that officials from the NYSC secretariat and her Local Government Inspector (LGI) had contacted her regarding her comments.
Reacting to the situation, Ajayi took to Facebook, arguing that while citizens are free to criticize public officials, NYSC members are bound by an oath and code of conduct. He insisted that Uguamaye’s remarks warranted severe punishment.
“But a corper violated her oath and code of conduct here. That is capital punishment under NYSC,” Ajayi wrote. “You can’t abuse the country you are serving as a corper under any guise and the symbol of sovereign authority, which is the president. She should be punished to the fullest extent, not just warned.”
Ajayi’s statement has sparked widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians questioning the severity of his call for punishment. Critics argue that the fundamental right to freedom of speech should protect Uguamaye from excessive sanctions, especially given the economic realities she highlighted.
Attempts to reach NYSC officials for clarification on the potential consequences for Uguamaye were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Meanwhile, the situation continues to generate debates on free speech, governance, and the role of the NYSC in national affairs.
