The Coroner, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, presiding over the inquest into the death of late singer Mohbad, has announced that the date for delivering the final decision will be communicated to all parties involved.
This development came on Friday, April 25, during a session at the Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died on September 12, 2023, shortly after sustaining an injury and being treated at his Lekki home. He reportedly developed convulsions after being given an injection by a nurse and died soon after. He was buried the following day. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised concerns, and the inquest is ongoing to determine the cause of death.
Giving his testimony during the inquest, Forensic pathologist Dr. Uwom Eze who conducted the second autopsy and medical review on Mohbad’s remains stood as the last witness in the inquest.
Under cross-examination by the African Women Lawyers Association, Abiodun Kolawole, he disclosed that Mohbad was not found to be abusing hard drugs, contrary to widespread allegations.
Following medical findings, Dr. Eze revealed that the singer had been administered “regulated” doses of antihistamines and painkillers, indicating that Mohbad was experienced significant discomfort before his death.
He also pointed to the likelihood of a “severe and rapid hypersensitivity reaction” caused by a strong allergic reaction triggered by a substance administered via injection, but stated that the advanced stage of decomposition disallowed for the cause of death to not be conclusively determined.
“Even a newborn baby won’t die from that injury. At the time I conducted the autopsy, the injury wasn’t even there, perhaps due to post-mortem changes,” Dr. Eze added.
Speaking further, Dr. Eze noted that he could not ascertain how the injection that reportedly preceded Mohbad’s death was administered due to a lack of available information.
“I couldn’t tell how the injection was given, because I had already lost (his) fluids,” he said.
Following further probe by the family’s lead counsel Wahab Shittu (SAN), Dr. Eze stated that the treatment given to the late singer by the nurse resembled a case of “medical misadventure.”
At the end of the inquest, the Coroner disclosed that the date for delivering the final decision to all parties involved will be communicated once it is determined.
This testimony has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and the potential role of medical professionals in his passing.
While the exact cause of death may still be under investigation, the testimony of Dr. Eze raises anticipation in Mohbad’s family, among fans, and the public, who are seeking answers and justice for the late singer.
