Nollywood actor Kunle Afod has addressed the controversial topic of sex-for-roles within the Yoruba movie industry, firmly denying its existence. Speaking during an interview aired on Seun Oloketuyi TV on YouTube, Afod offered a strong rebuttal to the allegations that have recently resurfaced across social media platforms.
Afod challenged actresses making such claims to come forward publicly, rather than sharing their experiences anonymously. For Afod, transparency and accountability are essential if such serious accusations are to be taken seriously. He believes that hiding behind anonymity only weakens the credibility of the claims and hinders meaningful discussion or resolution.
He also made a clear distinction between consensual relationships and coercion, emphasizing that mutual attractions can naturally develop in any professional environment. He noted that the presence of romantic relationships within the film industry is not unusual and should not automatically be labeled as exploitative or unethical.
Afod stressed that talent remains the primary factor in determining an actor’s success. He argued that regardless of any personal relationships an actress may have within the industry, without the necessary skills and performance ability, she would not be repeatedly cast in films.
As a potential solution for those who feel excluded or unfairly treated, Afod encouraged aspiring filmmakers and actors to take control of their careers through independent production. He suggested that building personal platforms and creating original content could serve as a powerful alternative to relying on established producers or directors.
He said, “The actresses that have been forced to have sex for movie roles should show up in public. We are all adults, dating among colleagues can happen in every profession. It happens in the university, it happens between doctors and nurses and even bankers too. It is a matter of choice to agree or disagree. Talent will always be ahead in everything.”
