Tension is mounting in Sokoto State following the sudden disappearance of Hamdiyyah Sharif, a vocal critic of Governor Ahmed Aliyu. She has been declared missing by her legal counsel, Abba Hikima.
Hikima announced her disappearance on Wednesday via his official Facebook page, revealing that Hamdiyyah has not been seen since 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday after she left her home to buy foodstuffs in Sokoto.
“Hamdiyyah has been missing since 10:00 am yesterday (Tuesday). She left home to buy food stuff in Sokoto and has not been seen since,” Hikima wrote.
He added that the Sokoto State Police Command has been officially notified of the situation.
Hamdiyyah Sharif has gained attention in recent months for her outspoken criticism of Governor Aliyu’s administration, particularly on social media, where she has voiced concerns over governance, transparency, and civil liberties in Sokoto.
As news of her disappearance spreads, civil society groups and activists have begun raising questions and calling for urgent action to locate her.
The circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain unclear, and there is growing concern over her safety, especially given her political stance and recent public criticisms of the state government.
As of press time, the Sokoto State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the case.
