Former Governor of Benue State and serving Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has issued a dire warning that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may disintegrate before the 2027 general elections unless immediate and serious efforts are made to address the party’s internal crises.
Suswam made this known during an interview on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Tuesday.
He expressed concern over the PDP’s deteriorating state, especially in the wake of growing internal divisions and high-profile defections.
At the heart of the PDP’s current turmoil is the unresolved dispute over who should assume the position of national secretary, a conflict that continues to deepen the party’s instability.
This internal discord has coincided with a significant political shift in Delta State, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and several other former PDP leaders recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The mass exodus marks a major turning point in the political landscape of the oil-rich state.
Reacting to the situation, Suswam described the PDP as being in a “critical condition.”
“A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party,” he said, highlighting a growing sense of disillusionment among party members.
He noted also that many members have already lost hope and believe that the party’s survival is unlikely under current conditions.
However, he pointed to an ongoing rescue effort led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, involving incumbent and former governors, as a potential lifeline.
“Whether there is light at the end of the tunnel in the efforts made by Senator Saraki will be seen in the next two weeks. For now, I would say that PDP is it in the hospital? Yes. Is it in the ICU to some extent? Yes, it is. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied,” Suswam stated.
He stressed that comparing the PDP to a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) illustrates how precarious its situation is, suggesting the party’s survival chances stand at 50-50.
He stated further that if Saraki’s intervention fails, the PDP may not make it to 2027.
