Iranian authorities on Wednesday executed three men convicted of collaborating with Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and smuggling equipment used in an assassination operation, in what officials described as part of a continuing crackdown on espionage activities linked to the “Zionist regime.
The executions were carried out at dawn in Urmia Central Prison, located in northwest Iran, following a final ruling by the country’s Supreme Court.
Iran’s judiciary-affiliated news agency, Mizan, confirmed the identities of the executed men as Idris Ali (son of Saleh), Azad Shojaei (son of Abdolrahman), and Rasoul Ahmad Rasoul (son of Ahmad).
According to Mizan, the convicted men were accused of smuggling equipment used in the assassination of an unnamed high-profile figure in Iran.
The equipment was reportedly brought into the country under the guise of an alcoholic beverage shipment, a move that authorities say facilitated the killing of the individual.
While Iranian officials did not reveal the identity of the assassination victim, the judiciary emphasized that the operation was tied to Mossad efforts aimed at destabilizing Iran’s internal security and targeting sensitive national figures.
The men were convicted of moharebeh (waging war against God) and ifsad fil-arz (corruption on earth) — two of the most severe charges in the Iranian penal code.
Authorities alleged that the men had established contact with a key Mossad operative based in a neighboring country, through whom they coordinated the covert transfer of the assassination equipment.
Following their arrest by Iranian security forces, court proceedings were held in the Revolutionary Court of Urmia. The judiciary stated that the defendants had access to legal counsel, with some represented by two attorneys.
“Based on strong evidence and credible documentation, the Revolutionary Court found the defendants guilty of espionage, cooperation with hostile foreign powers, and actions undermining national security,” Mizan reported.
The Supreme Court later reviewed and upheld the verdicts, clearing the way for the executions to proceed.
Iran has long accused Israel’s Mossad of conducting a covert war inside its borders, including the assassinations of nuclear scientists and acts of sabotage targeting its nuclear infrastructure. Tehran has executed several individuals in recent years on charges of spying for Israel, the U.S., and other foreign governments.
Wednesday’s execution marks a continued escalation in Iran’s efforts to deter espionage and foreign interference. In the official statement, the judiciary emphasized its “decisive action” against those collaborating with hostile regimes and vowed to “continue protecting national security with zero tolerance for treason.”
