Following widespread protests and allegations of imposition, manipulation, and irregularities during its local government primaries, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated reconciliation committees to address internal disputes and restore party unity.
The may 10 primaries, held ahead of the July 12 local council elections, were marred by controversy across virtually all local governments in the state. Aggrieved party members cited imposition of candidates, alleged vote theft, and manipulation of results—issues that triggered pockets of protest and a flood of petitions to the APC Appeals Committee.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Seye Oladejo, confirmed that the party has now activated its internal conflict-resolution mechanisms to calm tensions and heal divisions.
“The party, after receiving and considering the reports of the appeal, has resolved to activate its internal mechanism for conflict resolution and reconciliation to ensure that we go into the elections as a united force,” Oladejo said.
To ensure effective delivery, the reconciliation effort has been decentralized into the state’s senatorial districts:
Lagos East Senatorial District Committee: Chaired by Dr. Lateef Ibirogba, with members including Mr. Saheed Afonja, Chief Sumbo Onitiri, and Mrs. Sade Bakare.
Lagos Central Senatorial District Committee: Headed by former Deputy Governor Mrs. Sarah Sosan, with Funso Ologunde, Adedoyin Banjo, and Adigun Olalekan serving as members.
Lagos West Senatorial District 1 Committee: Led by Otunba Bode Oyedele, with Chief Jide Damazio, Alhaji Aleshinloye, and Mrs. Comfort Olalere as members.
Lagos West Senatorial District 2 Committee: Chaired by Alhaji Mutiu Are, with Mrs. Jumoke Okoya, Otunba Kehinde Adeniyi, and Mrs. Adeola Rashidat.
Each committee has been given a two-week deadline to complete its assignment and submit findings.
Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, praised the diversity and experience of the committee members, stating that their backgrounds reflect a broad spectrum of the party’s structure.
“We urge them to be painstaking and ensure that all aggrieved members are pacified and assured of better days ahead in a united party,” Ojelabi said.
