Sound Sultan
Olanrewaju Fasasi, known to the world as Sound Sultan, was a Nigerian musical icon whose artistry went far beyond the microphone. Born on November 27, 1976, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, he would later rise to become one of the most respected voices in Nigeria’s entertainment scene. Sound Sultan was not just a singer; he was a rapper, songwriter, actor, comedian, and recording artist, whose creative works reflected his sharp mind, social consciousness, and boundless versatility.
Growing up as the fourth of six children, Sound Sultan was raised in a close-knit and culturally rich Yoruba family. His passion for the arts began early, as he was influenced by his environment and the socio-political happenings around him. He was deeply rooted in family life and went on to marry his sweetheart, Chichi Morah (Farida Fasasi), with whom he had three children — one daughter and two sons.
Sound Sultan’s musical journey began in the 1990s, and by the time he released his breakout single, “Jagbajantis” in 2000, he had already established himself as a fresh and fearless voice unafraid to tackle societal issues with wit and depth. That song — a sharp commentary on corruption and governance in Nigeria — quickly became an anthem, earning him national acclaim.
Over the years, Sound Sultan carved a niche for himself as one of the pioneers of modern hip-hop music in Nigeria. At a time when the genre was still gaining acceptance, he fused traditional African rhythms with rap and reggae, paving the way for future generations of artists. His music consistently carried messages of peace, unity, education, and patriotism — themes that reflected his ideals and hope for Nigeria.
In partnership with his elder brother, Dare Fasasi, popularly known as Baba Dee, he co-founded Naija Ninja Entertainment, a production and record label company that nurtured young talent and provided a platform for independent artists. Through Naija Ninja, Sound Sultan mentored several artists, including Karma, Young GreyC, and Blacka, showing his commitment to the growth of the Nigerian music industry.
Beyond music, Sound Sultan was a gifted actor and comedian, often featured in Nigerian films and comedy skits. His creativity had no bounds — he brought laughter, inspiration, and critical thought wherever his art touched.
Sadly, on July 11, 2021, Nigeria and the world lost this exceptional talent. Sound Sultan died at the age of 44 after a courageous battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His passing shocked the nation and left a void in the entertainment industry, but his legacy lives on through his music, values, and the many lives he touched.
Today, Sound Sultan is remembered not just for his artistic brilliance but for his humility, wisdom, and commitment to social change. He remains an enduring symbol of what Nigerian music can be — intelligent, impactful, and deeply rooted in culture and truth.
