In a high-profile meeting in Lagos, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred one of Nigeria’s highest national honours — the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) — on American billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates, in recognition of his decades-long contributions to global health, education, and poverty alleviation, including key partnerships with Nigeria.
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was in the country as part of a multi-nation visit to engage with leaders and stakeholders on improving primary healthcare and scaling up innovative health solutions across Africa.
Gates met with President Tinubu alongside Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, highlighting a deepening collaboration between public and private sector leaders committed to transforming the continent’s health and development agenda.
A statement from the Gates Foundation confirmed that the tech mogul is also scheduled to participate in the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, which will focus on Africa’s innovation future and explore ways to accelerate progress in health, science, and artificial intelligence. The visit also includes meetings with local scientists, policymakers, and partners shaping Nigeria’s AI and healthcare strategies.
Speaking on the Foundation’s growing presence on the continent, Gates noted that locating offices in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal, along with the first African office in Ethiopia over a decade ago, underscores a commitment to strengthening partnerships and empowering local solutions.
The Nigerian visit follows Gates’ stop in Ethiopia, where he met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to discuss the country’s ongoing reforms and resilience in the face of evolving global aid dynamics.
The national honour bestowed by President Tinubu not only cements Gates’ longstanding relationship with Nigeria but also signals a renewed government commitment to collaboration on urgent developmental challenges.
