In its quest to proffer a lasting solution to building collapse in different parts of the State, the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSTML) has called on individuals and organisations embarking on any construction work to notify the agency and ensure that their building materials are certified.
The newly appointed General Manager of the Agency, Dr. Tajudeen Afolabi made the call on Monday during a Press briefing held at the headquarters of the Agency at Ojodu-Berger, Lagos.
He urged owners of existing structures to approach the agency for the integrity tests of their buildings in order to ascertain the livability or otherwise of the structures in the interest of all residents of the State.
While emphasising the need to have all building materials tested and certified by the agency, the General Manager pleaded with all stakeholders in the built industry as well as land developers to cooperate with LSMTL in order to achieve a safe environment in Lagos State.
Dr. Afolabi revealed the Agency’s plan to embark on an awareness campaign to enlighten stakeholders and guide the public from running foul of the existing law on materials testing and related matters.
He further informed that a committee has been set up to monitor activities of officers going around Lagos State for inspection of existing buildings and property under construction.
The General Manager disclosed that in carrying out materials testing, stakeholders in the built industry are required to bring the samples of their building materials for testing to ascertain their suitability and standard, stressing that the outcome of such tests are difficult to compromise.
He, therefore, enjoined the citizenry to assist the agency with necessary information on suspected buildings or construction sites by calling telephone number – 08023156132.
