Following the cancellation of the entire Dutch football season, Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers emerged joint-top scorer for the Eredivise season.
He shares the honour with Feyenoord striker Steven Berghuis – both finished with fifteen goals.
But the Heracles striker has not come to term with his new status.
“That realization is yet to come. It is an incredible honor and very nice that you can put this on your record. That this may come later on my Wikipedia page. I am really proud of that,” said Dessers.
”Becoming a top scorer at Heracles is of course also different than when you play at a top club. They score a lot more goals, they also get a lot more chances. I also think I am the first top scorer on behalf of Heracles. I find that especially special, I am very proud of that.”
The Belgian-born player switched national allegiance in 2019 to Nigeria, and was set to make his debut for the Super Eagles in an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) clash against Sierra Leone in March.
But that game was postponed because of the outbreak of the Coronavirus – leading to a complete halt in all global football activities.
