The State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has announced the arrest of some BUA workers, who allegedly violated the law on movement restriction in the state.
The governor, who made this known on Monday, added that the BUA workers had been arraigned and remanded.
“On Sunday, we arrested some staff of BUA, who violated the law. They have been arraigned in court and remanded,” he said.
Meanwhile, truck drivers working with BUA have appealed to the Rivers State Government to release their colleagues.
The drivers said that nine of their colleagues, including motor boys, were arrested on Sunday by policemen on the orders of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
The PUNCH reports that Wike had on Saturday announced a total lockdown of parts of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area from 6am on Sunday, April 19, 2020.
One of the drivers, who identified himself as Ismail, told our correspondent that their colleagues were taken away by the police between 4 pm and 5 pm on Sunday.
He said, “Nine of our colleagues were arrested on Sunday. One of those arrested called to tell us that the government was taking them to court. We are begging the governor to have mercy on us.”
Another driver, Kabiru Mohammed, said the policemen deflated the front tyres of their trucks, making it impossible for them to move.
He also pleaded with the governor to release their colleagues, adding that they did not deliberately flout the directive on the lockdown.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said he had not been briefed on the arrest and prosecution of the BUA workers.
