The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has enrolled 3,000 children, mostly from underprivileged families, in two mega schools in the Maiduguri and Jere local government areas.
The schools built by his administration at Ajilari Cross in Jere and Abuja-Sheraton in the Maisandari wards of Maiduguri metropolitan council have many out-of-school children. The schools were designed to take care of their educational needs.
A statement by the governor’s spokesman, Mallam Isa Gusau, said Zulum announced on Monday during the opening of the schools that the government was handing them over to the communities to run, while the government would pay the teachers’ salaries.
“In addition to this, the government is determined to maintain and sustain the schools in close collaboration with community efforts in ways that will serve generations,” the statement added.
In another development, the governor has inaugurated a newly-constructed road and network of drainage channels at the Moromoro community in Maiduguri.
He also announced the dualisation of the 10km Customs-Muna Road, explaining that the project would be executed at a cost of N5bn.
