The police have arrested a suspected cultist following a clash by rival groups at the Mile one market axis of Diobu in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
The police further said that about two houses were burnt during the clash that created panic among traders and residents of the area.
Sources said policemen arrested one of the suspected cultists, who ran into their station when he was being pursued by a rival gang.
It was gathered that the fleeing cultist that ran into the station and was taken into police custody sustained gunshot injuries.
But the invaders were said to have fled following heavy presence of armed policemen.
The invaders were said to have traced their rivals to their houses and reportedly set fire on the buildings, leaving many including traders running for their lives.
When contacted, spokesman of the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident describing it as a supremacy battle.
Omoni, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said that the command launched an investigation to unravel the cause of the incident with a view to apprehending the fleeing suspects.
He said: “Though the matter has nothing to do with the police but we are investigating. One person has already been arrested and we are on their trail.
“At the end of the day we will round them up and they will face the weight of the law. It was an inter-cult war and supremacy clash that resulted in the carnage. They burnt their rival houses. They burnt about two houses.”
