A truck driver has been arrested and is being detained at the Sotubo Police Station in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State for crushing to death a man and his wife to on the Sagamu-Ogijo Road The truck with number plate AGL 505 WX ran over the couple, who were passengers on a commercial motorcycle, and they died on the spot. It was gathered that the accident, which involved two vehicles and a motorcycle, occurred around 7.40am. PUNCH Metro gathered that the couple were on their way to their shop, where they sold foodstuffs near a company opposite the Redeemer’s College, Sagamu. An eyewitness said the motorcyclist hit a Toyota Camry car with number plate EKY 733 GF in the rear, while attempting to overtake it. The motorcycle reportedly fell sideways, but the incoming truck ran over the passengers and crushed them to death. The motorcyclist reportedly jumped off the motorcycle to avoid being crushed and sustained injuries. The Public Relations Officer, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the accident. He said the crash occurred at Odogbara, a few meters from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation along the Sagamu-Ogijo Road Akinbiyi blamed the crash on excessive speed and reckless riding on the part of the motorcyclist, which resulted in brake failure. He stated, “The motorcyclist was inbound Sagamu from Ogijo when in an attempt overtake a Camry car, after having overtaken three trucks, hit the car from the rear. “The three victims – a couple and a motorcyclist – were on the motorcycle before the accident occurred. “The motorcyclist had successfully overtaken three trucks, but hit the car from the rear. “The motorcycle fell on its side; the two pillion passengers it was carrying fell on the road and the truck coming from behind ran over them. They died on the spot, while the motorcyclist was injured.” According to Akinbiyi, the couple were on the way to their shop when the fatal crash happened. He said, “We learnt that the couple were selling foodstuffs in a shop by a biscuit company and were going to the shop when the accident happened. “The motorcyclist, who sustained injuries, did not know them. He was only conveying them to the shop.” On the whereabouts of the truck driver, Akinbiyi said he had been arrested and was being detained at the Sotubo Police Station. He added that the corpses of the victims had been deposited in the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, while the injured motorcyclist was taken to the Idera Hospital, Likosi.
