Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, the Kusenla III of Ikateland.
Exemplary leader, culturally aware, socially responsive, detailed in outlook and conduct, down-to-earth, prim and proper that is all packed in the gentleman royal. Oba Ademola who hails from the ‘great Elegushi Royal Family, according to the family tradition began with Kusenla reputedly a descendant of King Olofin of Iddo, whose other descendants became known in history as the Idejo chiefs, erstwhile autonomous rulers of their respective territories.
They were, and still are, the dukes or landowners of Lagos and its surrounding districts’, reads the historical document citing his rich pedigree.
Oba Ademola has continued in the stride of the Kusenlas as he adds modernity befitting of the 21st century to the royalty of the family’s long-standing ancestry in his 11 years-and-counting reign on the stool of his progenitors. He was the youngest king in Lagos in 2010 when he ascended the throne having previously served the administration of Governors Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Raji Fashola on different roles. He had also served as Administrator, Business Development and Strategy, Elegushi Property Development Company.
It is no surprise that he is working for communal progress, peaceful coexistence and societal development in Ikateland, Lagos, and Nigeria as a whole. He recently embarked on a couple of activities aimed at betterment of the Ikate dynasty. So much is happening for him in this month of April. Last week, he installed into chieftaincy the new Aro of Ikateland in person of Chief Ganiyu Olalekan Bakare. In two weeks’ time, he will be clocking 11 years on the throne. During the week, he held a golf tournament and a novelty football match. Today 10th of April, he is 45 years old.
The Alayeluwa HRM Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi of Ikateland who had a brief interview with Olabode Adeyeri of Citizen NewsNG along side few press men during the golf tournament said about all these milestone activities: ‘This is a way for me to appreciate God for being alive. Many people have died from COVID-19, it is not their fault but it is also a reminder for us alive that God is good.’
On the maiden Oba Elegushi Golf Tournament which he intends to become an annual sporting event, the monarch said: ‘I have been looking for how I can host Golf Tournament in my name. So I just decided this time around I should give it a shot and everybody turned out to support me. This is the first edition. It is going to be a yearly tournament. We are going to take it to the next level. We know how to organize events and to make our golfers happy. The way we are going to go about it, it is going to be played across the country.’
‘I love golfing. It is a kind of hobby. It is a game that teaches you about life, that nothing is perfect. When you are a golfer, you must be calm. It teaches you how to manage every situation you find yourself. Golf is not elitist. It is not an elderly game. This is the first edition. Next year is going to be much better than this. We will look at bringing in the younger generation. We will organize a tournament for children at different age range.’
The overall winner of the men category of the golf tournament, Mr. Andrew A. Igbakume said: ‘I am very happy to be the winner of the first edition of the Oba Elegushi Golf Tournament. It’s on record. Not only did I win a Prize, I won a big prize. I like Oba Elegushi as a person. The way he carries himself, ‘O je ki Oba wun eniyan je, he makes you love to be a royal’ because he is not the only one we know. He is available, humble and reachable.’
The overall winner of the women category of the golf tournament, Princess Oghene said: ‘I feel good, I mean, I feel my heart is out. I’m excited. I played my heart out today. This is my 22nd Trophy”.
Chief Mike Okoro, Captain of Ikoyi Golf 1938 spoke about the golf tournament, ‘The Elegushi Golf Tournament first Edition is a sign of good things to come. We all enjoy ourselves and we are all happy with him. He is a fine gentle man. His Royal majesty is loved by almost everybody because of his disposition to people. He is a Consumer Golfer. He does not attach his position to life. That’s why we people are here today to testify that he’s a very good jolly fellow. He is a man God has chosen. He has a bright future. I pray to the Almighty God to bless him. Give him more wisdom like King Solomon in the Bible. He’s a good man, a good Royal Majesty’.
‘My advice to the winners of the Golf Tournament is that they continue to win and not to relax. They can win like Tiger Woods.’
