The vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kashim Shettima has expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the people of Maiduguri, Borno State over the mysterious fire has burnt down the entire complex of Maiduguri’s Monday Market.
The fire, which started at about midnight, continued to gut hundreds of shops within the market till dawn on Sunday.
Sources familiar with the incident said the fire started at about midnight when residents of the city, who had spent most of their day voting in Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections, had retired to bed.
The market is said to be one that contributes largely to the economy of the state.
In a tweet, the former Borno Governor, he promised that the effects of the misfortune will be cushioned by several interventions;
He said, “As Nigerians partake in a historic election, the good people of Borno State have been devastated by fire outbreak at the prized Monday Market in Maiduguri. This tragedy hit us truly hard, having resulted in loss of properties and livelihoods of some key pillars of our economy.
“For more than three decades, the market complex has been an illustrious fulcrum of commercial life in Borno State. The Monday Market isn’t, for us, a mere landmark, but a symbol of the economic invincibility of Maiduguri even when our life and livelihoods come under threat.
“I sympathise with all the victims of this tragedy and reassure them that our commitment to making their lives better has just begun.
“The Borno State Government is already in control, as it always does, and would intervene kindly to cushion the blow dealt by this misfortune.”
