The candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has been declared the winner of the presidential election in Enugu State.
Mr Obi won with almost 90 per cent (88.7 per cent) of the votes cast in the state.
He secured 428,640 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 15,749 votes.
Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress scored 4,772 votes, less than one per cent of the total valid votes.
The candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, garnered 1,808 votes to come fourth, followed by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Peter Umeadi, who polled 1,548 votes.
This was announced by the State Collation Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Maduebibisi Iwe, on Monday.
Mr Iwe, a professor and the vice-chancellor of Michael Okpara University, Umudike, said a total of 2,112, 793 voters registered for the election in the state, while 482, 990 were accredited for the election.
The vice-chancellor said a total of 468, 891 votes were cast in the election.
He added that 456, 424 votes were valid, while 12,467 were rejected.
Enugu is the only state in the South-east where INEC has officially called the results the presidential results so far.
The other four states in the region where presidential results are being awaited are Abia, Imo, Anambra and Ebonyi.
In some parts of the Anambra and Abia states, INEC has directed a rerun in polling units where the exercise did not hold last Saturday.
The LP has won several House of Representatives and Senatorial seats across the region, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.
This newspaper reported, for instance, that the LP has won two House of Representatives seats and one senatorial seat so far in Enugu State. The defeated candidates of the ruling PDP in the state in the elections.
