A popular socio-political activist and co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls campaign, Aisha Yesufu, said the anger burning in the hearts of Nigerians may lead to another protest worse than the one experienced in 2020.
In 2020, many Nigerians staged a protest calling for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, unit of the Nigeria Police Force notorious for brutalising youths.
The protest, tagged ‘End SARS’, was started on Twitter, resulting in mass demonstrations occurring in all major cities of the country.
Writing via her X account on Monday, Mrs Yesufu said Nigerians might just be caught unawares by another demonstration.
She wrote: “Nobody saw the #EndSARS protest coming. Nobody will see the next uprising coming.”
“Sadly, it might end up being violent. There is a simmering anger fueled by the impunity and brazenness of the corrupt politicians and rulers who have rigged their way into power. Nobody will be spared.”
