Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State witnessed a horrific accident as a 40-feet container toppled, crushing vehicles and resulting in the immediate loss of at least four lives.
The calamity unfolded at the notorious Ogbor Hill area, a site plagued by numerous past auto accidents, Vanguard reports.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene as a trailer, transporting the sizable container, careened down the hill from the Ehere direction. Struggling with brake failure, the trailer collided with another vehicle atop the Aba River Bridge, eventually crashing into a stationary lorry.
The impact caused a chain reaction, leading to a collision with a Sienna bus and the container cascading onto other vehicles, trapping numerous occupants.
The immediate aftermath saw heroic efforts from residents and passersby attempting to rescue the victims, while some individuals tried to exploit the situation by attempting to vandalize and set the trailer ablaze, prompting resistance from diligent rescue workers.
It is noteworthy that Ogbor Hill, particularly near the abattoir in the last two years, has gained notoriety for frequent road accidents, with the then Abia State Government having ordered the relocation of Ahia Udele market in proximity to the scene following a similar tragic accident two years ago that claimed numerous lives, including market traders.
